Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The commode evolved in 17th-century France as a low cabinet containing drawers, replacing the traditional chest. The breakfront design features a central section that projects forward, creating a sophisticated architectural silhouette popular during the neoclassical periods.

Authentic period commodes are typically constructed using a solid oak or pine carcass overlaid with fine veneers and marquetry patterns such as satinwood, kingwood, or walnut. Traditional joinery includes hand-cut dovetails for the drawer construction, accompanied by cast bronze or brass mounts known as ormolu.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the secondary timbers inside the drawer linings and backboards for age-related tool marks, hand-cut dovetails, and shrinkage patterns. Additionally, cast bronze mounts should exhibit hand-chased detailing rather than modern casting seams, and the marble tops should feature hand-polished bevels consistent with period hand-finishing.

Pair this statement furniture piece with a contemporary minimalist mirror or abstract artwork hung above to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design. It functions effectively as a focal point in a hallway, living room, or dining area when accessorised with restrained, sculptural objects.

Maintain antique veneered and marble surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply occasional specialist microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood without sealing it.
