Antique Italian School Oil Painting "Young Lady Reading a Scroll" 19th C

19th century
For Sale by Regent Antiques
Description

This is a magnificent antique Italian School, 19th Century, oil on canvas painting of a young lady reading a scroll, mid 19th century in date.

This stunning painting features the bust-length portrait of a beautiful young woman, wearing blue and white robes and a white turban with brown waved hair. She is in three-quarter view turning to the left against a dark neutral coloured background, with two people watching her through a window.

The contrast between the white dress of the woman and the dark that surrounds her tends to draw the spectator's eye to her adorable and likeable face - her calm and serene gaze and her pink healthy lips. It contributes to the peaceful feel of the painting.

It is housed within a stunning Italian Florentine pierced and carved gilded scrolling foliate frame.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Fine network of aged craquelure across the paint: natural ageing over generations.
Red clay base showing through worn gilding: traditional water gilding.
Fluted Neoclassical moulding with acanthus corners: nineteenth-century design.
Mitre joints opening slightly at the corners: timber shrinkage over time.

This nineteenth-century Italian School oil painting on canvas depicts a seated young lady reading a scroll. Rendered in a neoclassical style, the figurative portrait shows a woman in blue and white robes and a white turban against a dark neutral background, with two figures visible through a background window. The artwork sits within a fluted gold gilded frame featuring carved scrolling foliate decoration and pronounced moulded corners. Palette colours include gold, blue, white, and brown. The frame measures 85 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 4.5 cm deep. Suitable for a gentleman's library or a formal reception room, this piece is designed for wall mounting and is typically positioned above the mantel. The gilded woodwork shows a rich metallic finish with ribbed detailing along the outer border, while the painted surface employs strong tonal contrasts to highlight the subject's calm expression.

FAQs

A classical framed portrait can serve as a focal point above a mantelpiece or sideboard, or be integrated into a gallery wall to contrast historic subject matter with contemporary decor.

Position the painting away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources, clean light surface dust gently using a soft dry brush, and avoid applying commercial chemical polish.

Authentic period works display age-appropriate canvas weave patterns, natural surface craquelure, period stretcher construction, and original carved or gilded framing methods.

Artists utilised oil pigments bound with natural drying oils on canvas or wooden panels, presented within hand-carved or moulded timber frames finished with leaf gilding.

19th-century Italian School art frequently drew inspiration from Classical, Renaissance, and Baroque traditions, combining structured academic figure drawing with rich chiaroscuro lighting and narrative themes.
