This Edwardian sculpture depicts a huntsman seated atop a walking horse in an Animalier style, modelled after the work of Isidore Bonheur. Rendered in dark brown bronze, the piece rests on a naturalistic base mounted upon a polished rectangular marble plinth. The figure wears traditional riding attire and a cap, holding reins in one hand and a crop tucked under the other arm, while the horse shows muscular definition and a focused stride with reins looped across its neck. The sculpture measures 43 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 15.5 cm deep. Placed within a gentleman's library or study, this piece suits a mantelpiece, sideboard, or desk setting. The dark bronze finish and classic equestrian motif complement traditional interior schemes, bringing a sculptural focal point to surface displays in a home.

FAQs

The Animalier movement originated in 19th-century France, focusing on realistic portrayals of animals and equestrian subjects with precise anatomical detail.

These figures are typically cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand casting method, finished with a chemical patina, and mounted on a polished marble or stone base.

Authentic pieces usually feature foundry marks, foundry stamps, crisp chasing details, natural patination wear, and the sculptors incised signature on the base.

Place the piece on a fireplace mantel, wooden sideboard, or executive desk to serve as a focal point alongside leather-bound books and muted textiles.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually to protect the original patination from moisture and oxidisation.
