Original Retro has dated this Victorian Shadwell Forgery Diptych to the 19th Century.
This is a rare Diptych made in the 19th century by the (in)famous Shadwell brothers.
(other word for Jesus) holding the key of the abyss, he is actually a representative of God.
The base is depicting a knight with sword in full armour and in the righthand corner the letters V.S. two holes are perforated to one side.
The reverse unintelligible legend and dated 1020, a loop is situated at the top.
The Shadwell brothers started their career as mudlarks in the 19th century and sold their finds to antique dealers in London,
soon the found out that they could earned more if they were making their own "Antiques", the made between 5000 and 10.000
forgeries, mainly pilgrim badges, all the items were made as an one off.
The British museum was one of many tricked by them at the time, some experts believed the items are real, an court case was
held but could not give an clear verdict.
