Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Antik Dragon Japanese & Other Fine Art

Fine silver coronation medal of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, 1902. The coronation was planned for 26th June 1902 (as shown on the medal) but the king required emergency surgey (for an abdominal abscess) which caused it to be postponed until August 9. The couple’s conjoined crowned busts are shown on the obverse (front/heads), while the reverse depicts Britannia, symbol of strength and virtue, gazing toward Westminster Abbey. The medal comes in its original (well worn) box. Diameter 38mm, weight 33.7g. Condition is fine/extremely fine.

The medal was struck by Elkington & Co. (Birmingham) and designed by Emil Fuchs, a famous artist, medalist and sculptor active in the early 1900s. He painted countless pictures and made many sculptures depicting important and royal people, and many of his works are now displayed in prestigious museums.
