Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1880s.

The artist has brilliantly captured the concentration needed to tackle this task, whilst at the same time portraying the boy enjoying his favourite pastime. Signed within the integral base and applied with a plaque engraved with the title. 13.5ins high (34.5cms) high overall.

Adolphe-Jean LAVERGNE (1852-1901) lived and worked in Paris. He studied, like a number of famous french sculptors, under François Jouffray who himself was admitted into the Ecole des beaux-Arts in 1824 and won the Prix de Rome in 1832.
