Pair of mid C19th Italian’ ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir bronze studies of Greek Spartan warriors.

Finely-cast and well-patinated pair of bronze warriors depicted as Spartans in traditional helmets and clothing , each brandishing shields , and with a spear and sword respectively.

The warriors each posed in a fighting or action stance , weapons drawn , robes flowing . Each mounted upon a block plinth base of siena or ‘marmo giallo’ marble.

The legendary and fearsome Spartan army was from the Ancient Greek state of Sparta, whose citizens were trained in the disciplines and honour of a warrior society. They lived a military-focused lifestyle following the virtues of austerity, strength and fitness .

The figure with the spear probably portraying Leonidas I , King of the Spartans , the other figure possibly a Hoplite , a member of his personal guard .

Highly decorative and evocative pair of bronzes which convey the qualities and warrior status associated with the army of the Spartans.

Both in excellent original condition with a rich colour and patina.
