Victorian Hand Painted Loving Cup

19th century
Description

A unique English porcelain two handled Loving Cup lavishly painted with flowers, inscribed in gilding verso William Brown 1854.

A gorgeous Victorian two handled Loving Cup hand painted with an exquisite bouquet of flowers, including a rose, auricula, a passion flower and forget-me-nots on one side and a garland of pink roses on the other below the name. The mug commemorates William Brown and is dated 1854. The handles are strong and heavily gilded in a snakeskin pattern. There is more decorative gilding below the lip.

This Loving Cup was probably given as a presentation trophy and was intended to be a family heirloom. The history of the Loving Cup dates back to Saxon times.

Condition: Very good indeed, no chips or cracks. Slight wear to the gilding on the top rim above the flowers and verso to the base as visible in the photo.

Date: 1854

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A loving cup is a large, two-handled vessel traditionally shared among guests at ceremonial banquets, weddings, and formal occasions to symbolise unity and friendship. By the nineteenth century, porcelain loving cups were frequently commissioned or gifted as decorative presentation pieces rather than practical drinking vessels.

Victorian loving cups were primarily crafted from hard-paste or soft-paste porcelain, earthenware, or silver. Ceramic examples were hand-decorated using mineral-based enamel pigments and highlighted with burnished gold leaf gilding before being kiln-fired.

Authentic pieces display visible hand-applied brushstrokes with subtle variations in enamel thickness, unlike uniform transfer-printed designs. Period porcelain also typically exhibits slight irregularities in the body, gilt wear consistent with age, and potential makers marks or impressed registration numbers on the base.

A porcelain loving cup functions well as a standalone decorative accent on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf. It can also be repurposed as a table centrepiece to hold low floral arrangements or styled alongside other antique ceramics for curated visual interest.

Clean gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove dust. If necessary, hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, or submersion, as these will wear away delicate gold leaf and enamel details over time.
