The Life of a Nursery Poodle by John Parry 1865 Pastel Drawing

19th century
Description

This FRAMED PASTEL DRAWING, measuring nearly 4 feet in length, is entitled SEVEN HOURS IN THE LIFE OF A NURSERY POODLE and is signed and dated JOHN PARRY 1865.

It shows seven images of a TOY POODLE and its demise over a period of seven hours:

12 o'clock - (Just arrived) Perfect Doggie

1 o'clock - Tail-less

2 o'clock - Eye-less

3 o'clock - Nose-less, Leg-less

4 o'clock - Head-less

5 o'clock - Body-less

6 o'clock - Wind-less

The drawing is in its original frame which, like the POODLE, is well-worn. There is a small crack in the glass in the bottom left corner.

A wonderful and unusual example of a VICTORIAN'S humorous view on Christmas and the presents given.

Height: 9.5 inches (24 cm)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian animal portraiture often combined narrative detail with soft pastel pigments on paper or board, capturing fine textures and episodic scenes popular in mid-19th-century decorative art.

Artists applied dry pastel pigments directly to toned paper or board, which was then sealed under glass within gilded wooden frames to protect the unvarnished surface from damage.

Authentic period drawings exhibit age-appropriate paper discolouration or foxing, hand-applied pigment layers, period framing hardware, and contemporary signatures or dates.

Position panoramic framed art as a horizontal focal point above a console table, sideboard, or mantelpiece to anchor furniture arrangements and add historical context.

Display pastel drawings under protective glass away from direct sunlight, excessive humidity, and heat sources to prevent fading, mold growth, or pigment displacement.
