French Bronze Figure Cupid Eros Moreau Vauthier Thiebu Founders Paris Sculpture

19th century
Description

After Augustin-Jean Moreau Vauthier: a French late 19th Century patinated bronze, by Thiebaut Freres Foundry, of Cupid, standing semi-nude poised to throw the arrows in his hands, a quiver hung from his shoulder, bearing signature and founder's mark, raised on a white marble base.

A rare interpretation of the subject not carrying a bow but poised holding three arrows with many more in his quiver.

Good original chocolate brown patina.

Height 9,5/8" or 243mm, weight 1414 grams.

In excellent condition with no damage or repair.

As is often found on figural bronzes the arms and wings are separately cast then attached to the body using a fine engineered dry joint rather than a welding or soldering process, typically these joints show to varying degrees on the arms.

Augustin-Jean Moreau-Vauthirer (1831-1893) - French sculptor, student of the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He made his debut at the Salon in 1857. Moreau-Vauthier specialized in allegorical and mythological characters. Several of his works are in the collections of the Musee d'Orsay.

****************

Thiebaut Freres - a Parisian foundry, one of the most prestigious factories operating in the 19th and 20th centuries (1844-1926) in France. The most important monuments of Paris, including the Monument of the Republic on the Republic Square, the Triumph of the Republic on the Square of the Nation, or the statue of Napoleon on the top of the Vendome Column, are the works of this foundry. The factory remained in the hands of the Thiebaut family until the end of the 19th century. Fumiere and Gavignot bought some of the shares, but kept the original name and added their names.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
