Bronze Animalier Wading Bird by Moigniez

19th century
Description

A charming French “Animalier” bronze of a reeve* by Jules Moigniez (1835-1894), depicted having just caught a small fish. Signed (somewhat indistinctly) within the base, this is a classic subject by Moigniez who specialised in fine sculptures of smaller birds. His mastery of the subject is perfectly illustrated here, with great attention paid to every detail of both the base and the bird itself. 8ins long; 4.5ins high.

* A ‘reeve’ is the female of a medium-sized wading bird (similar to a sandpiper) called a ruff. During the mating season, the ruff displays a breeding plumage that includes a large collar of ornamental feathers ~ hence its name. Mainly breeding in Eurasia, particularly Scandinavia (a few are occasionally found in lowland areas of Eastern England), they migrate to warmer climates of India and Africa during winter months.
