Seymour Lindsey, who refers to similar types "For ironing the plain rounded surface of mob caps a standing iron was used. This has a rounded body supported by a stem. In the more elaborate examples the body opened to receive an iron heater" ....or even hot embers from the fire which would heat up the iron....note the fluted parts of the iron for doing ruffs, collars etc...the acorn finial is a nice finish, which unscrews when in use..... in very good condition and a real collectors gem..!
