Victorian Four Gallon Measure Vr Marked Seamed Measuring Jug

19th century
Description

Original Victorian Four Gallon copper measure, circa 1860.

The best ever, most attractive shape, near spherical, bulbous and curved throughout.

Squat wide form 14,3/4" or 37.5cm diameter.

No spinning, all hand (hammer) raised with castellated braized seams to all elements.

Original '4 GALLONS' label and lead plug VR over a crossed shield, excise stamp.

In very good, sound, tight condition, not over worked, some dents and scrapes, relatively insignificant for its size, not cleaned or polished, and for me best left like this.

Good old surface, not recently polished.

Height to top of handle 14" or 36cm, weight 5.4 kilos.

An admirable and rare variation on the standard straight sided haystack or 'West Country' measure.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, standardized copper measures were utilised in commerce and agriculture to accurately quantify liquids such as ale, milk, or spirits in accordance with official Weights and Measures regulations.

Traditional copper measures were handcrafted using sheet copper joined with brazed or dovetailed seams, featuring rolled rims for structural strength and heavy handles secured with metal rivets.

Authentic pieces typically feature official verification marks such as monarch crowns or VR stamps, visible brazed joinery seams along the body, and natural wear patterns across the base and handle.

Large copper vessels serve as grounded focal points on fireplace hearths, kitchen islands, or open shelving, adding warm metallic tones and visual texture to modern farmhouse or eclectic interiors.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth to preserve the natural oxidisation and patina, avoiding harsh chemical polishes or abrasive pads that can remove historical verification markings.
