Pair of Mid C19th French Bronze Reduction Sculptures of ‘The Marly Horses’

19th century
Description

Pair of mid C19th French bronze reduction sculptures of ‘The Marly Horses’ .

Well-cast pair of bronzes after the original marble sculpted groups by Guillaume Coustou in 1743 , showing dramatically rearing stallions restrained by their attendant grooms . The original pair carved in Carrara marble , were commissioned by King Louis XV of France for the trough or horse pond , at the entrance to the grounds of his Chateau de Marly . The originals now exhibited at the Louvre Museum, Paris .

This fine pair of bronze reductions convey the power and presence of the originals , have a good original surface and patina, with only minor highlights caused from historic handling and gentle cleaning . Raised on ovoid naturalistically-modelled bases each with cast foliage to the foreground.

In excellent condition with only minor faults in the attachment of the reins to the stallion heads .

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
