Description

P. J. MENE: a fine quality bronze study: "Djinn ~ Cheval a la Barriere" by this famous French animalier sculptor.

The stallion stands by a wooden fence, apparently calling for its mate. Inscribed signature within the integral base; 10.5ins wide; 7.5ins high; 4ins deep.

***Pierre Jules MENE (1810-1879), the most famous French 'animalier' sculptor after Barye, started work with his father who was a metal turner. He exhibited his first bronze at the Salon in 1838, quickly becoming popular, and winning many awards for his animal sculptures a number of which was cast at his own foundry.
