This is the first gilded bronze sculpture I have handled in a while, and I am really struck by how splendid the surface is - it feels like utter luxury!

This is an art nouveau bronze figure of an elegant lady by Johannes Franz - Johnny to his friends - Büchs (1878-1963).

Born in Dresden in Germany, sculptor Johnny Büchs came to Paris in 1896, and stayed for almost twenty years. Working in Montparnasse, he exhibited his art at the Salon d'Automne. Simply because of his German nationality, he was arrested and imprisoned during the first world war. After the war, he settled in Switzerland and is now largely considered a Swiss artist. The elegant sculpture presented here however stems from his Parisian period - it is signed and dated 1909. Measuring 18.5 x 8 x 13 cm, the bronze is loosely resting on a secondary base (a small gap is visible between the two elements at the front. The overall size is 20 x 10 x 15 cm.
