19th Century Mahogany & Marquetry Fitted Wardrobe by Edwards & Roberts of London

19th century
Description

A stunning Edwards & Roberts Sheraton Revival inlaid mahogany breakfront wardrobe dating to the early Victorian period. Profusely decorated with fine quality ribbon tied floral marquetry and penwork in veneers including satinwood and harewood, and with kingwood crossbanding & box stringing. The swan neck pediment and cornice also crossbanded with kingwood and inlaid with floral motifs and faux fluting. With raised arched panels to the four doors which open to reveal a linen press fitted interior with the original wooden hanging pegs, drawers and sliding trays (which could be removed to give three larger hanging areas) and all standing on a plinth base. Stamped ‘Edwards & Roberts’ to the upper left drawer.

In good solid condition and sympathetically cleaned and polished by hand using traditional materials. There are marks and signs of damage from age and some chips to the inside of the doors. Supplied with keys for the door and drawer locks. Dismantles into six sections for moving with the cornice, sides section, upper & lower centre all lifting off the plinth base.

The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately

Width - 94in (239cm)

Depth - 25.75in (65.5cm)

Height - 90.25in (229.5cm)

Internal depth (centre) - 20.25in (51.5cm)

Internal depth (sides) - 17.25in (43.5cm)

Edwards & Roberts were acclaimed English cabinetmakers founded in London in 1845 and who specialised in marquetry, inlay and ormolu making reproductions of earlier styles such as their Thomas Hope ebony & brass inlaid mahogany chair in the collection of the V&A Museum. They were able to produce superb quality English furniture using some of the finest quality timbers and became one of the leading cabinet makers during the Victorian period.  As well as making and selling their own furniture, they also retailed, restored and adapted antique furniture. The company ceased trading in 1899.

Dealers Notes

When buying it is important appreciate antiques have long histories of daily use and as such, over time they gain minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits, signs of old woodworm, lifts and losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina. We describe the main flaws and those that fall outside of this bracket but cannot describe each marks separately and therefore suggest you do take the time to request extra photos. We do offer a 14 day money back guarantee if you are unhappy with your purchase but cannot refund the return shipping cost. If you are not sure please do not buy without clarifying or take the view that the only way to have it as near to new as possible is to have it fully and comprehensively restored.

For delivery we use a small carrier experience in carrying antique furniture. Delivery is usually within 31 days and the carrier will make arrangements with you directly. We can provide contact details of other carriers if required.
