Heuer Autavia Gmt Chronograph Watch

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Its About Time
Description

A superb, large Heuer Autavia Chronograph GMT with date, ref-1163 Automatic. The Autavia was the first watch introduced under the leadership of Jack Heuer (the new CEO) in 1962, taking its name from 'Automotive' and 'Aviation'. The watch is now fully overhauled and the untouched dial is still very dark, near black (not faded to brown). The lume is good too. The movement is the fine Calibre 11, GMT, the watch will be supplied with the Red/Blue Nato strap shown and also a new Leather perforated sports strap similar to the original. Circa 1970, (This model was often sold with 'Leatherette' type strap which unfortunately perishes). It is worth mentioning that this watch is also supplied with the original distressed Heuer 1163 bezel insert. A rare watch.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally introduced in 1962 for automotive and aviation timing, the Autavia name derives from the combination of Automobile and Aviation. The GMT variant incorporated a dual time zone display with a two-colour rotating bezel to allow pilots and travellers to track multiple time zones simultaneously.

Mid-20th century chronographs typically feature stainless steel cushion or tonneau-shaped cases, acrylic or mineral glass crystals, and self-winding automatic movements. High-contrast dials often utilise painted luminous markers and sub-dials for maximum legibility.

Authentic timepieces feature correct period dial typography, accurate logo execution, and matching reference numbers stamped between the case lugs. Original movement calibres, correct hand profiles, and age-appropriate bezel wear further confirm authenticity.

A vintage sports chronograph pairs suitably with smart-casual attire, tailored jackets, or everyday casualwear. Interchanging the strap between a fabric NATO band and a leather strap provides versatility across formal and casual settings.

Mechanical timepieces require regular servicing every three to five years by a professional watchmaker to clean and lubricate the internal movement. Keep vintage wristwatches away from water immersion, strong magnetic fields, and extreme heat to preserve operational integrity.
