Large Late C19th Italian 'Grand Tour' Souvenir Bronze Figure , After the Antique, of the Drunken Faun of Pompeii .

19th century
Description

Large late C19th Italian 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze figure , after the antique, of the Drunken Faun of Pompeii.

Verdigris bronze copy of the statue of the acclaimed satyr or Faun from ill-fated Pompeii , cast by the Sommer Foundry , Naples.. The Roman original excavated at Pompeii from the site of the House of the aristocratic Patrician or Centenary. Discovered beside the water-pool or pluvium , in the peristyle at the property ,Mounted upon a stone block of 'tufa' or limestone , the re-discovered original sculpture now in the 'Museo Archeologico Nazionale', Naples , Italy.

The mythological woodland faun creature is depicted in a staggering , seemingly intoxicated pose , a look of intense concentration on his face as he attempts to fill a wine cup ( deficient as in the original) from a wine-skin or bladder slung over his arm .

A true to scale copy of the magnificent Roman original with a 'faux excavation ' verdigris patination , and mounted upon a stepped block of riven and aged white marble or limestone , copying the original.

Shown completely naked , the well-modelled and balanced statue , conveys the motion and movement of the intoxicated satyr , his muscular body complete with a Faun's tail .

Signed to the rear edge of the wine-skin by the Foundry , "Sommer Napoli ".

This particular example of the statue has been manufactured as a fountain figure , and the stone base has been carved and chiselled out beneath to provide access for a pipe for a water supply. The water-supply tubing is concealed within the rear leg , and the wine bag is fitted with a concealed fountain exit nozzle.

Could be re-employed either as a water feature or simply presented as a large decorative classical statement with exceptional dramatic presence .
