Description:
The couch, which is constructed of solid oak, boasts an elaborately carved high back, retaining the original tapestry upholstered panels, flanked by extensive foliate carvings, topped with carvings of eagles on the pediments. The back is secured with barley twist back supports, which terminate in floral cartouches below turned finials and upholstered arms, which are also raised on barley twist supports. Below, the couch features a firm sprung seat base. The sprung seat also retains the original tapestry upholstery, finished with brass studwork. The couch is raised on turned legs, interspersed with floral cartouches, united by barley twist stretchers for added stability.
Condition Report:
The couch is in good original condition. As the couch boasts the original tapestry there is general fading consistent with the age of the material but no holes or damage. The tapestry is in surprisingly good condition; the couch has clearly cared for and cherished over the years. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the oak frame, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The frame and arms of the item are solid and in excellent condition with no splits or loose movements. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This item sits firm on the ground, does not wobble and is ready to use.
