Rare George III Chippendale Period and Design Padouk and Mahogany Linen-press or Wardrobe with Open Fret-work "Swan-neck" Pediment Cornice.

Description

Rare George III Chippendale period and design padouk and mahogany linen-press or wardrobe with open fret-work "swan-neck" pediment cornice .

Excellent quality padouk linen press of elegant proportions, with converted-for-hanging cupboard top above a chest-of-drawers base. Superb figured solid padouk construction surmounted by by a pierced and carved mahogany "swan-neck" pediment cornice with circular carved paterae terminals , above a dentil moulded frieze. The pediment's form taking it's inspiration from the classical temple architecture of antiquity and Roman triumphal arches .

The 2 short over 2 long drawers base section, fitted with original gilt-brass rococo-design handles with detailed cast oval back-plates , brass escutcheons and oak-linings . The drawers with carved line 'scratch' cock-beading from the solid padouk drawer fronts . The bases of the drawers and inside of the top all with original blue 'sugar-paper' linings .

The oblong doors with highly-figured 'book-matched' solid padouk panels , with a beaded surround. Fitted with original bolts , escutcheon, lock and key .

Raised on original bold bracket feet . The 2-door cupboard top which once housed linen slides , now fitted with a mahogany rail for hanging . Original panelled and boarded back .

Wonderful rich colour and patina to the rare exotic padouk timber . Has been cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Minor historic repairs to fret-work of pierced mahogany pediment .
