Bronze "Imperial Half Bushel" Dated 1835

Description

A superb quality and now rather rare William IV period BRONZE HALF BUSHEL MEASURE in perfect condition.

Engraved to one side is: "Imperial Half Bushel, County of Cumberland, 1835". It is also stamped with a number of Customs & Excise "proof" marks and also with the makers: de Grave of London. Width (including handles): 21ins; 15.5ins diameter; 7.25ins high (53.5 x 39.5 x 18.5cms)

*** These measures were used by Customs & Excise Officers to check that traders were not short-selling their customers. Offenders were heavily fined, and repeat offenders could even be banished to Australia!
