Engraved to one side is: "Imperial Half Bushel, County of Cumberland, 1835".
Width (including handles): 21ins; 15.5ins diameter; 7.25ins high (53.5 x 39.5 x 18.5cms)

These measures were used by Customs & Excise Officers to check that traders were not short-selling their customers. Offenders were heavily fined, and repeat offenders could even be banished to Australia!
