We understand that it originated from the Normandy region of northwest France. The couch is constructed of solid walnut and beech and features a lovely shaped frame with an arched back, secured by shaped arms, which incorporate carvings of sunflower heads above shaped walnut moulded supports. The couch benefits from a comfortable sprung seat, the seat is firm but comfortable; you do not sink into the seat. The shaped seat features a pretty scalloped under frieze and the underside is finished with traditional hessian backing. The couch has been newly upholstered in top quality luxurious structured paisley chenille fabric, which incorporates lovely pale reds and gold colours. The upholstery is finished with fine quality matching braiding. The couch is raised on fine turned legs, which incorporate floral motifs, and terminates on lion paw feet. The front legs are united by a decorative panel carved stretcher, with further turned stretchers on the sides and back, for additional strength.

Condition Report:

This couch is in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the walnut & beech frame but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The couch has been newly upholstered in top quality luxurious paisley structured chenille fabric; therefore the upholstery is new and in excellent condition (it’s clean with no signs of wear and tear or damage). The seat is firmly sprung, but at the same time, is extremely comfortable. The underside is upholstered in traditional hessian. The frame, arms and legs are well constructed and solid in joint, having been constructed from solid walnut and beech. There has been restoration to the rear legs in the past. As the couch boasts the original polish it has a fantastic colour and patination. This colour can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The back and arms are also in good condition with no loose joints, and no missing carving. This couch is well constructed, solid in joint and is ready to use.
