This Victorian pair of wall art panels features hand-painted botanical studies of fruit and floral compositions set behind glass. The wooden frames display off-white paint finishes with gilded internal mouldings, and one painting holds the signature of M. Barnes. Signs of age include surface wear and light crazing visible across the glazed panels. Measuring 134 cm high, 67 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, these rectangular decorative items bring traditional English country house character to domestic interiors. They suit display above a sideboard in a dining room or living space, hung securely on a wall to highlight the green, gold, and colourful fruit motifs.

FAQs

Victorian fruit still life paintings emerged during the nineteenth century as popular decorative artworks depicting natural abundance, featuring detailed compositions of fruits and flora intended for domestic dining rooms and parlours.

These artworks were typically created using oil or gouache paints on wooden panels, canvas, or reverse-painted glass, enclosed in moulded timber frames with gesso and gold leaf detailing.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display natural age-related craquelure, period-appropriate timber backings or fixings, and gentle wear to the original painted or gilded frames.

Positioning the pair side-by-side above a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece creates a balanced focal point, complementing both classic traditional and neutral modern schemes.

Display the panels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and clean them by dusting lightly with a dry microfibre cloth without using liquid polish or harsh solvents.
