Large Fine Quality French Bronze Sculpture Titled 'Aboukir' by Jean Francois Theodore Gechter (1796-1844)

A large fine quality patinated bronze sculpture titled 'Aboukir' by Jean Francois Theodore Gechter (1796-1844).

The subject of the bronze is the battle of Aboukir, Egypt which took place in 1799, it consists of two figures mounted on horseback holding a sword and dagger (one being from Napoleon's army, the other from the Ottoman army), the horses standing above a helpless figure below who is trying to survive.

Jean Francois Theodore Gechter was a French sculptor and a student of Francois J Bosio, he was known for creating scenes of battles and hunts of which this is a fine example, other examples of his work are 'Death of Tancred' and 'Wounded Amazon'.

Napoleon Bonaparte defeated Seid Mustafa Pasha's Ottoman army on 25th July 1799 at Aboukir. The French attacked the Ottomans and the Turkish army fled, some drowning, some fleeing to Aboukir Castle but surrended soon after. The Turks suffered around 8000 casualties from an army of 18000 men, the French only 1000 from 7700 men and 1000 horsemen. This battle temporarily secured France's control over Egypt.

The base is marked 'Th Gechter' which is how the artist signed his works.

The bronze is a very powerful piece and is in good condition overall with some small losses.
