Victorian Oak Upholstered Chaise Longue (Circa 1840)

19th century
Description

This is a very good quality antique English early Victorian upholstered oak chaise longue, circa 1840, in excellent condition.

Summary:

• Circa: 1840

• Period: Early Victorian

• Provenance: England

• Wood: Oak

• Transitional design

• Attractive upswept right-hand arm

• Newly upholstered

• Red machete upholstery

• Swab & bolster cushion

• Sweeping carved backrest

• Straight front

• Carved frame

• Octagonal shaped legs

• Original brass cup castors

• Excellent quality & condition

• Solid in joint

• Free 14 days UK returns policy

The chaise boasts (when facing) a right-hand raised sweeping carved arm. The back frame, which is also carved, sweeps down finishing near the level of the seat. The front of the chaise has a straight frieze, which is carved in a similar manner but also with open fretwork detail. The end of the chaise features a raised carved panel to hold the swab cushion in place. The suite has been freshly upholstered in top quality red machete upholstery, displaying a diamond pattern, finished with matching red braiding. This upholstery would have reflected the original style of upholstery used. The swab cushion retains the original horsehair filling. There is also a bolster cushion. The legs feature block panels above with an octagonal design. The chaise stands on its original brass cup castors. The frame and legs are constructed of oak. This is an unusual style in the fact that its design takes influence from the William IV and early Victorian period. It is most likely a transitional design across these two periods and is therefore quite rare in design.

This item features a rich dark oak colour. It has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Dimensions:

External height = 94.5cm or 37¼” or 3ft 1¼”

External width = 188cm or 74” or 6ft 2”

External depth = 57cm or 22½” or 1ft 10½”

Seat height = 47cm or 18½” or 1ft 6½”

Seat width = 153cm or 60¼” or 5ft 0¼”

Seat depth = 53cm or 20” or 1ft 8”

Condition Report:

The chaise longue is in excellent condition having just been professionally reupholstered. Therefore, the upholstery is new and free from damage, rips, and marks or fading. Importantly, the back rail and side arm are firm and there is no play in the joints. The swab cushion retains the original horsehair filling. The polish finish to the oak frame is in excellent condition and there are no missing carvings. The four legs stand firm on the floor and the chaise does not wobble. The brass cup castors are original. The chaise is solid in joint and is ready to use.
