The Meiji period lasted from 1868 until 1912 and represented the first half of The Empire of Japan during which the country moved from a feudal society to its modern form. The samurai sword was banned (apart from ceremonial use) putting many very fine metalworkers out of business. Some turned, successfully, to producing very fine bronze work, much of which is highly prized today.
