This is a superb quality antique Victorian 4ft oak high-back carved box settle, circa 1860, that has been constructed in the style of the Tudor period (circa 1500 – 1530). The settle is constructed of solid oak panelled timbers. The back consists of four recessed floral and leaf carved panels. Flanking the panels and to the whole of the outer frame, the settle is enriched with punch work. Above these recessed back panels is a row of carved floral demi-lunes. Two shaped down swept arms are secured in place by bobbin turned spindles to the seat frame. Below the hinged seat lid, there is another row of carved demi-lunes followed by four floral carved lozenge recessed panels. Interspersed between the panels are profuse leaf carvings. There is a working lid in the centre seat. The inside of the box settle is ideal for storing shoes and wellies in the hallway. The settle comes with a viscose flat weave cotton mix swab cushion. The settle can be used with or without it depending on personal preferences. If you would like to have the swab cushion recovered, please contact us for a quote. Condition Report:
The item is in excellent original condition, which is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The seat hinges are in excellent working order. The arms and back of the settle are completely firm. The settle comes with a viscose flat weave cotton mix swab cushion, which is clean and free of marks or holes. As this item boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
