This is a superb quality antique Regency brass inlaid double scroll end upholstered mahogany couch, circa 1830, constructed with a naval theme to commemorate the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. At this time, England was importing the best quality mahogany from its colonies. The frame and baluster fluted legs are constructed of solid mahogany terminating in brass socket castors. The frame features attractive up-swept scroll end arms, which are decorated with floral carvings. The reeded top frame has been constructed with a naval theme to commemorate the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The couch has a central floral pediment, flanked by a reeded shaped frame at the end of each corner of the couch. Decorative sunburst carved cartouches can be seen at the top of the fluted legs. The frame has been newly upholstered inn an embossed silk & cotton gold brocade upholstery, embellished with a raised silk square pattern. The couch is finished with gold braiding. The couch features a webbed base, detachable horsehair swab cushion and two baluster cushions at each end. The horsehair swab cushion is original. The settee seats 3 – 4 persons. This couch boasts a stunning original colour and patination, which can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

External depth = 61.5cm 24¼” or 2ft 0¼”

Back height = 50cm or 19¾”

Arm height = 83.5cm or 32” or 2ft 8”

Seat height =47cm or 18½”

Seat width (including bolster cushions) = 164cm or 64½” or 5ft 4½”

Seat depth = 54cm or 21¼”

Condition Report:

This item is in excellent condition. The frame, arms and back of the settee are solid in joint. The frame has been newly upholstered in an embossed silk & cotton gold brocade upholstery, embellished with a raised silk square pattern. The couch features its original horsehair swab cushion. There is no wear, marks or damage to the upholstery. The braiding is in excellent condition and is firmly attached to the couch.
