M Lees and Sons has dated this piece to the 1850s.
Sculpted on a commission after the ancient Roman original, by Flaminio Vacca (1538-1605)from a marble column capital that derived from the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus. Since 1789 the guardian pair have stood upon the steps of the Loggia off the Piazza della Signoria (see photo) ,previously the pair were placed by 1598 at the Villa Medici ,Rome , hence the title. Mid-brown consistent patination.
