C19th 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze model of the "Medici Lion". Well-cast bronze reduction of one of the famous marble lions situated in The Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence ,Italy. Sculpted on a commission after the ancient Roman original, by Flaminio Vacca (1538-1605)from a marble column capital that derived from the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus. Since 1789 the guardian pair have stood upon the steps of the Loggia off the Piazza della Signoria (see photo) ,previously the pair were placed by 1598 at the Villa Medici ,Rome , hence the title. Mid-brown consistent patination.
