Driscolls Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1870s.
Interestingly it retains the label of a removal company who transported the wardrobe at some point, a J. Uttley & Sons Ltd of Blackpool. The Pantechnicon, mentioned on the label, was the name for a van used to carry such goods and was drawn by horses. It has a moulded cornice with rounded corners above a full length central mirrored door. This is flanked by two further doors displaying beautiful figuring, moulded edges and turned handles. The central interior has a fixed shelf over two mahogany lined linen trays. Below this is a two over three graduating drawer configuration, all mahogany lined with flush brass military designed handles. The interiors of the outer sections both have hanging rails and hooks, the left said also has a deep drawer while the right side has a shoe box. The wardrobe stands majestically on a beautifully figured plain plinth, still retains its original back boards and splits into a total of five sections for ease of removal. It is a medium warm shade of walnut with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.
