Driscolls Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1800s.
Although wide it has deceptively low proportions (maximum height being 174cm / 68½"). As such, tall ceilings are not, surprisingly, a prerequisite for this grand piece. It has a shaped pediment with beautifully scrolled Gillows style carvings that hide several secret compartments. The central section has two over five graduating drawers displaying cock beading and the original turned handles. The drawers are flanked by cupboard doors, each having beautifully figured flamed mahogany panels with cross banded edges and reeded mouldings, typical of the Gillows style. The right hand cupboard contains a later brass hanging rail while the cupboard to the left contains two fixed shelves along with, unusually, two small drawers with the original brass handles. Both cupboard doors have a key and working lock while the whole piece stands majestically on a moulded plinth. The mahogany is a lovely warm medium shade with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.
