Driscolls Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1800s.
It's not surprising then that it is stamped W. Williamson & Sons, Guildford noted for their quality pieces during the late Georgian and Regency periods. This press also appears to have been in the ownership of the great public speaker Bishop Wilberforce, who is most remembered for his opposition to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution which he famously voiced at the Oxford Evolution Debate in 1860.
The press itself has a moulded cornice above two beautifully figured cupboard doors with key and working lock. When opened they reveal an interior containing four mahogany lined sliding linen trays, one of which displays a silver plaque with the words 'Bishop Wilberforce's Wardrobe'. The lower section has a two over two drawer configuration, all being mahogany lined with beautifully figured fronts, cock beading and the original turned handles. The press still retains the original back boards and sits on delightfully turned bun feet. It has aged to a rich warm shade of mahogany with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.
