C19th 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze figure "The Dying Gaul" after the antique .Mounted on a striated purple marble base (has old repaired crack ) well-detailed casting of the iconic image of "The Dying Gaul". The study depicts the wounded Gaul wearing his neck torc , slumped upon his broken sword ,horn and shield in defeat. Naked except for a modesty fig-leaf, his belt , horn and martial equipment discarded around him. The Roman marble version of the Hellenistic original was re-discovered in the C17th whilst excavations were made for the 'Villa Ludovisi' in Rome , and later housed therein .Now exhibited in the Capitoline Museum , Rome (see photo below). Copies can be found in many of the sculpture galleries and libraries of the great English country-house collections such as Syon Park and Blenheim Palace ,and the leading museums of the world. Some rubbing to areas of colour to bronze and old repairs to marble base.
