The couch still retains its original upholstered beautiful rich grey draylon deep-buttoned upholstery. The head of the couch features a lovely scroll arm back. The down swept arms are over stuffed to give a sense of presence. The couch is braided with a gold and red cotton material. The couch boasts a firm sprung base, which is comfortable to sit on. Below, the frame is connected to the stunning front fluted rosewood and gold leaf turned legs, which sits on the original brass and mug castors. The couch stands on pretty turned feet and it. The back feet are splayed which is a sign of good quality.
James Shoolbred & Co. who were famous cabinetmakers between 1820 – 1931, were based in Tottenham Court Road London. High quality fine furniture was made and sold by this highly esteemed & respected company. Specialising in furniture of the Aesthetic Movement they were always front line for the latest fashions and evolving tastes of the populous.
Condition Report:
The frame, back and legs of this couch are completely original. Importantly, the back rail and side arm are firm and there is no play in the joints. The grey draylon upholstery is original to the couch (very rare to see); the braiding is clean and free of marks, dirt or tears although there is some minor fading to the arms (see photos). The springs in the seat are firm and in good condition. The four legs stand firm on the floor and the chaise does not wobble. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
