Victorian Satinwood & Rosewood Breakfront Fitted Wardrobe

19th century
Description

A fabulous Victorian breakfront fitted wardrobe in satinwood with rosewood mouldings, fluted bands and Adams style carved panels. Of superb quality, possibly by Holland & Sons.

It features a central bevelled mirror door which opens to reveal an interior fitted with hooks, shelf, slides and drawers. The flanking doors have an Adams panel to the top, a further long panel beneath edged with fluting and rosewood mouldings and with a similar drawer beneath. The doors each have brass twist-to-open brass handles and are fitted with their original ‘Clarke & Timmins, Birmingham’ locks.

The side hanging sections are 47.5cm (18 3/4in) deep so a side-to-side hanging rail could be added if preferred, the centre section is larger at 58.5cm (23in) deep and again a side-to-side hanging rail could be added (and the shelf and slides removed). For moving and delivery the wardrobe can and will be dismantled into seven parts as detailed below.

This is in very good condition, theres an old repair to the moulding at the bottom right side of the centre door and a graze to the left side of the moulding on the same door. THere are very few other minor perfections and light paint spots yet to be removed.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or if you would like more photos.

The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately ?Width: 241.5cm wide (95in) ?

Depth: 68.5cm (27in)

?Height: 235cm (92 ½in)

?For transportation and moving this bookcase splits into seven sections (three cornices, three main sections, plinth)

Dealers Notes

When buying it is important appreciate antiques have long histories of daily use and as such, over time they gain minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits, signs of old woodworm, lifts and losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina. We describe the main flaws and those that fall outside of this bracket but cannot describe each marks separately and therefore suggest you do take the time to request extra photos. We do offer a 14 day money back guarantee if you are unhappy with your purchase but cannot refund the return shipping cost. If you are not sure please do not buy without clarifying or take the view that the only way to have it as near to new as possible is to have it fully and comprehensively restored.

For delivery we use a small carrier experience in carrying antique furniture. Delivery is usually within 31 days and the carrier will make arrangements with you directly. We can provide contact details of other carriers if required.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian breakfront wardrobe features a central section that projects forward beyond the flanking side cupboards, frequently incorporating a full-length mirrored door and integrated internal fittings.

Cabinetmakers of this era typically constructed frames from solid timbers such as pine or mahogany, faced with cut veneers of satinwood, rosewood, or walnut, alongside hand-cast brass ironmongery and plate glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass locks or drop handles, and natural patination across the veneered surfaces.

Positioned as the main focal storage unit in a master bedroom or dressing area, the warm golden tones of satinwood complement neutral wall shades and contemporary textile accents.

Position the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement, dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain to maintain the finish.
