The superstructure lends itself to be dressed with romantic fabric drapes. The four central turned posts hold the canopy in place and are held in place by large brass thumbscrews. The two-tier foot and headboard are mirrored in design showing turned spindles, carvings and a central carved urn flanked by two smaller urns either side. Above the headboard and footboard, two sets of spindles hold the drop down canopy in place. Within each set of spindles is a blind fretwork frame. The bed sits on a set of four Ball and Claw feet. This bed would look stunning in either a contemporary or traditional setting. It dismantles for easy transportation and we can provide affordable good quality custom mattresses.
Provenance:
The style of these beds dates from 1840 until 1947 (until Indian Independence). The beds were constructed for the British Raj, their families and the British Military in Colonial India. The beds were designed to collapse and be transported “flat pack” so could easily be moved whilst on military exercises and to their summerhouses in the hills. They were made when the Raj was at its height. The size, style and quality of the bed depict the status of the occupier or the military rank of the owner. They were made from the finest wood usually Mahogany, Teak or Sisoo wood (a member of the rose wood family). This particular bed originates from the Bombay area of India.

Condition Report:
This bed is in excellent condition and is commensurate with its age. Some nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The bed has a very good colour and patination however, there is slight variation in the colour of the bed because the features the original polish. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
