Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art has dated this piece to the 1900s.
The whole base completely smothered in deep carving including inside the kneehole , the back being made up of fielded panelled timbers ,the outer edge of the top is surrounded by a bamboo carved pattern inside which sits a further carved border around the solid hardwood top that has been polished over the years to give a superb colour and patina .
This stunning example of Chinese craftmanship should not be confused with the later heavily carved shiny softwood mass produced furniture you so often see , this is a hardwood probably rosewood (padouk) .
Sorry about the poor photos due to the awful weather and bad light today , this piece was actually used as a dressing table in the bedroom of a large house where i purchased it , it has multiple uses and would be the featured piece in most room settings .
