Bed Very Rare 17th Century Oak Cupboard Bed

17th century
Description

Here we have a very rare 17th century cupboard bed. The structure being made from Oak has wonderful colour and patina. There is a shaped cornice to the front and superbly panelled doors which open to reveal the bed space. The split timbers around the sleeping area have holes which would have been for rope which would have criss crossed to hold a straw mattress. There are now added pieces to hold a solid board but these could easily be taken off. Although not shown in the photos there is a top and base for the mattress. As this would have been built in there is an open back which would gone against a wall and an open end above the headboard. The other end is closed and has a candle shelf half way up with typical candle shaped burn marks. There is a cupboard door underneath. The main doors are beautifully panelled and rest in pin holes both top and bottom. The Oak has exceptional colour throughout. Of course the bed is made from pegged construction with the pegs raised from the surface as the main wood shrinks back over time. You will see the bed comes apart and is easy to assemble. The internal measurements are 68 inches long and 45 wide. Externally 72 inches long 71 high and 51 wide. A wonderful period piece of museum quality and rarity ready for your home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
