19th Century Oil Painting on Copper Antoine Watteau

19th century
Description

This is a good 19th century oil painting on copper panel of a party of elegant aristocrats in an Italianate garden setting painted in the manner of Antoine Watteau.

Jean-Antoine Watteau was a French painter and draughtsman whose brief career spurred the revival of interest in colour and movement, as seen in the tradition of Correggio and Rubens. He revitalized the waning Baroque style, shifting it to the less severe, more naturalistic, less formally classical, Rococo.

Watteau was born in Valenciennes France in October 1684 but died at the young age of 36 in July 1721.

This painting is in the true romantic Rococo style popularised by artists like Watteau and Francois Boucher.

It is competently painted in oils on a copper panel and dates from around 1850.

The painting is in excellent condition with good strength of colour and much charm.

It is framed in an attractive Rococo style frame with complements the work beautifully.

The frame measures 36 cms by 32 cms overall.

Originating in 18th-century France and popularized by artists such as Antoine Watteau, fete galante paintings depict figures in elegant contemporary costume engaging in music, dancing, or courtship within pastoral landscape settings.

Copper panels provided an exceptionally smooth, non-porous surface that allowed artists to execute fine, miniature detail without canvas grain interference, while preventing paint cracking associated with wood movement.

Authentic pieces typically feature period oxidation or patination on the reverse copper substrate, visible hand-applied brushwork with fine craquelure, and period construction methods visible on the backing or frame.

Intimate copper oil paintings framed in heavy Rococo gilt moulding create a striking focal point when displayed on a gallery wall, positioned above a mantelpiece, or layered within an eclectic bookcase display.

Dust the picture surface gently with a soft dry brush, avoid moisture or chemical solvents, and maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent delamination of the paint layer from the metal plate.
