Maple & Co

The renowned furniture retailer of London, Paris and Buenos Aires was famous for top-quality furniture.

They were by Royal Appointment and became one of the leading furniture manufacturers of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. They used only the finest quality timber, which was imported directly from all over the world.

Maple and Company were founded in 1841 in Tottenham Court Road, London, and had premises there until 1997.  By the 1880s they were the largest and most successful furniture makers in the world, their huge emporium having become a tourist attraction in its own right. In addition to their middle-class clientele, they furnished Embassies, hotels, beautiful homes, and palaces all over the globe, including Tsar Nicholas's Winter Palace, the Hofburg Imperial Palace in Vienna, and many of Britain's country houses.

This Edwardian chest of drawers dates from 1900 and originates from the workshop of Maple & Co. Constructed from dark brown flame mahogany, oak, and brass, the piece exhibits distinctive figured wood grain veneers, inlaid boxwood stringing, and working locks with escutcheons. The front elevation presents two smaller short drawers positioned above four graduated full-width drawers, all furnished with circular brass ring handles and backplates. A pink tassel hangs from a key inserted into the upper right drawer. The cabinet rests on bracket feet. Standing 124 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 49 cm deep, this tall storage item occupies a vertical footprint suitable for placement in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to hold folded garments, linens, or personal accessories.

Produced during the reign of King Edward VII, Edwardian mahogany furniture often features refined interpretations of eighteenth-century designs, incorporating flame mahogany veneers, boxwood stringing, and polished brass fittings.

Period chests from this era utilized solid oak or pine drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, flame-cut mahogany veneers over solid timber bases, and cast brass handles.

Authentic Maple & Co pieces frequently carry a stamped maker name along the top edge of a drawer, an engraved metal plaque inside, or distinctive quality drawer joinery typical of the London maker.

Position the piece as a focal anchor against contemporary neutral walls, complementing the rich wood tones with structured table lamps, modern artwork, or brass decorative accents.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain annually to maintain timber hydration and prevent environmental drying.
