Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Deep impressed plate marks: printed from hand-engraved metal plates on a roller press.
Aquatint tonal shading with watercolour washes: early nineteenth-century British topographical printmaking.
Engraved Roman lettering below the subject: publication style of the Regency era.
Gentle mellowing to the untrimmed margins: age on unvarnished period wove paper.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

FAQs

Early 19th-century British topographical prints typically document specific towns, landscapes, and architectural landmarks using techniques such as aquatint or copperplate engraving. Produced during the Georgian and Regency eras, these works recorded regional geography and pastoral views prior to widespread industrial expansion.

These prints were traditionally rendered on heavy rag paper using etched copper plates to create fine line detail and aquatint tonal washes. Colours were subsequently applied by hand using water-based pigments or through multi-plate ink impressions.

Authentic period prints feature visible plate marks pressed into the paper surrounding the artwork image, along with natural paper age tones. Inspection under magnification reveals hand-applied watercolour or soft tonal aquatint dotting rather than mechanical halftone dot matrix structures.

Displaying topographical prints inside simple timber or gilt frames creates a focal point within traditional or eclectic interior schemes. Arranging them in small groupings or gallery walls alongside complementary architectural works provides historical narrative to a space.

Position paper prints away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent fading and discoloration. Mount the artwork using acid-free, archival-quality mats and UV-filtering glass to shield the paper from environmental degradation.
