Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 16TH CENTURY:
Gothic lettering stamped around the boss: typical of early German brass dishes.
Repousse spiral gadroons in the centre: raised by hand from the reverse.
Rolled rim enclosing an inner wire: early edge construction.
Deep dark oxidation across the underside: long undisturbed natural ageing.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This German Nuremberg brass alms dish dates from the sixteenth century, specifically between 1500 and 1550. The piece is fashioned from brass with a polished golden finish and darker patinated recessed areas. A large central raised boss comprising twelve floral gadroons forms the focal point, surrounded by concentric raised circular mouldings and an inner band of gothic script. The wide flat rim displays stamped fleur-de-lys decoration, bordered by an outer rolled edge. Natural wear is visible through surface darkening, minor scratches, and uneven coloration across the metal surface. The dish measures 41.3 cm high by 41.3 cm wide and 3.8 cm deep, providing a substantial circular profile. In a contemporary home setting, this historic item makes a striking wall display plate mounted on a timber-panelled dining room wall, or serves as a decorative centerpiece displayed flat on a hardwood console table in a hallway.
