This sculpture of a pheasant originates from the Art Deco period around 1930 and carries the signature of Maurice Font on its base. Cast in spelter to form a stylised cock pheasant, the piece presents a dark brown bronze patinated finish over the metal body, contrasted by some wear to the finish around the neck area. The bird stands with streamlined tail feathers sweeping downward to rest against a rectangular two-tone marble plinth exhibiting black and gold veined markings. The entire assembly measures 30.5 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this statuary brings mid-century character into domestic spaces. The substantial dark marble base anchors the slender avian figure, while the metallic sheen highlights the smooth curves of the breast and the engraved detail of the sweeping tail feathers. It integrates readily into living rooms, hallways, or studies as a decorative tabletop object that complements existing periods of interior design without requiring complex maintenance.

Art Deco animalier sculpture emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by streamlined forms, elongated proportions, and a move away from strict realism toward geometric simplification. Artists focused on capturing the motion and silhouette of wildlife using cast metals mounted on solid stone bases.

Sculptures from this period were commonly cast in bronze or spelter (a zinc alloy) and finished with dark patinas or cold painted coatings. Bases were typically fashioned from marble, such as Portoro or vein marble, onyx, or slate to add weight and structural contrast.

Authentic pieces typically feature etched or cast signatures near the base, age-appropriate wear to the patina, and period-correct marble mounts with sharp or bevelled edge construction. Metal castings often show hand-finishing marks and crisp details around features like feathers and claws.

An Art Deco sculpture works as a focal point on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or desk. Positioning the item against neutral backgrounds or paired with contemporary ceramics balances its structured metallic form and dark marble tones.

Dust metal surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or abrasive cleaners that can damage the original patina. Marble bases should be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth and kept free from acidic substances to prevent etching.
