Antique Oriental Chinese Export White Metal Bird & Floral Bowl C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Chinese Export White Metal Bird & Floral Bowl, c.1900

A particularly attractive late Qing / early 20th-century Chinese export white-metal bowl, dating to approximately 1900 and distinguished by its exceptionally decorative bird and floral design.

The substantial lobed bowl stands upon a low circular foot and has a gently flared, shaped rim. The exterior is extensively hand-worked with a series of individual decorative panels arranged around the body.

The most striking panels depict birds amongst flowering branches and foliage, including long-tailed exotic birds rendered with finely detailed plumage. These alternate with elaborate scrolling floral and foliate designs, creating a richly patterned surface around the entire bowl.

Particularly effective is the finely punched and stippled ground, which provides a dark textured background against the brighter raised decoration and gives the birds, flowers and scrolling foliage considerable depth and definition.

The lower body is formed as a series of lobed or petal-shaped panels filled with further stylised floral and foliate ornament, continuing the design towards the circular foot. The combination of birds, flowers, scrolling foliage and repeating petal forms creates an exceptionally decorative piece when viewed from any side.

The underside of the foot bears an intriguing four-character Chinese-style workshop or artisan chop mark within a rectangular cartouche. The precise workshop represented by the mark has not been identified.

The interior has been deliberately left substantially plain, contrasting with the highly worked exterior and showing the underlying hand-finished character of the bowl.

The surface has developed attractive age-related toning, with darker patination retained throughout the chased and punched recesses.

This Chinese export white metal bowl dates to approximately 1900 during the late Qing period. The piece takes a lobed form with a gently flared rim and stands upon a low circular foot. The exterior displays extensive hand-worked chasing and repoussé decoration, featuring distinct panels of birds amongst flowering branches alternating with scrolling floral motifs, all set against a finely stippled ground. The lower body incorporates petal-shaped panels, while the underside bears a four-character artisan chop mark within a rectangular cartouche. The plain interior contrasts with the heavily patterned exterior, showing darker patination and toning within the recesses alongside surface wear consistent with age. The bowl measures 6 cm in height and 13 cm in width. Placed on a sideboard top, this decorative piece suits a gentleman's library or any reception room as a standalone display object or cabinet accent.

Chinese export metalwork refers to silver and white metal items produced in China from the late 18th to mid-20th century specifically for export to Western markets, blending traditional Asian motifs with Western functional forms.

These bowls were crafted from silver alloys or white metal using repousse and hand-chasing techniques to create raised decorative panels depicting floral and fauna motifs set against stippled backgrounds.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-hammered relief work, textured stippled grounds, character artisan stamps or silver hallmarks, and gentle hand-formed irregularities.

Position the bowl as a focal accent on a sideboard, coffee table, or console, where its reflective, relief-textured surface captures natural light and provides contrast against matte timber or stone surfaces.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and clean lightly with silver polish or mild soapy water, avoiding abrasive chemicals that strip natural aged patina from recessed chased areas.
