Antique Chinese White Metal Lotus Dish Qianlong Mark C.1920

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Chinese White Metal Lotus Dish with Qianlong Mark, c.1920

An attractive and substantial Chinese white-metal dish, probably dating from the early 20th century and bearing an apocryphal four-character Qianlong reign mark.

Of distinctive lobed flower-head form, the dish is extensively decorated with eight radiating stylised foliate sprays surrounding a raised central lotus or chrysanthemum-form rosette.

The decoration combines bold relief work with finely detailed floral ornament across the recessed ground, surrounded by multiple concentric stepped borders. The contrasting polished high points and darker recessed areas give the decoration considerable depth and definition.

The reverse is similarly decorated with recessed foliate motifs and bears a four-character mark reading:

乾隆年製

Qianlong Nian Zhi

“Made during the Qianlong reign.”

The Qianlong Emperor reigned from 1736–1795; however, Qianlong reign marks were also used on later Chinese decorative works. This example is therefore conservatively catalogued as an early 20th-century piece bearing an apocryphal Qianlong mark, rather than as a Qianlong-period object.

The substantial construction is particularly notable for its relatively small size, weighing approximately 150 grams at only 10cm diameter.

Darkened recesses in the relief decoration: a standard finishing technique to add depth.
Tarnished and worn high points: the result of many years of handling.

A Chinese white metal lotus dish is a decorative or functional shallow vessel crafted from silver alloy or nickel silver, decorated with sculpted lotus patterns popular in Chinese decorative arts.

These pieces were typically constructed from white metal alloys, which often combined copper, zinc, and nickel, or lower-grade silver alloys finished with chased or repousse relief work.

Authentic pieces frequently display apocryphal reign marks, such as Qianlong stamps, alongside hand-chased motifs, characteristic surface oxidisation, and structural seam marks from traditional casting methods.

A metal lotus dish can function as a refined catch-all tray for jewellery or keys on a sideboard, coffee table, or entrance console, adding textural interest to modern surfaces.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip historical patina; light application of microcrystalline wax helps prevent further oxidisation.
