An impressive Chinese-style carved green jadeite Laughing Buddha (Budai), displayed on a separate shaped dark wooden stand.

Previously catalogued by a UK auction house as a carved jadeite figure of a seated Buddha, this substantial example features attractive translucent celadon-green colouring with deeper green tones and distinctive cloudy white mineral formations visible within the stone.

The seated Buddha is depicted with a broad smiling expression, elongated earlobes, an exposed rounded stomach and flowing robes with carefully worked folds.

The carving displays an attractive polished finish, with visible hand-finishing and tool marks to areas of the underside.

Budai, often known as the Laughing Buddha, is traditionally associated with happiness, prosperity, generosity and good fortune.

The carving weighs an impressive 970g without its stand and makes a striking Oriental decorative display piece.

Condition: Displays surface wear, minor scratches, marks, areas of discolouration and natural-looking internal mineral variations. Some rougher areas and lines are visible, particularly around the underside and rear. The separate wooden stand has wear consistent with use and age. Please study all photographs.
