Captain Charles Franklin Head was a British Army captain who is best known for his 1833 work, Eastern and Egyptian Scenery, Ruins, etc.

This monumental travel volume was illustrative of his journey from India to Europe and served a major strategic purpose advocating for the practicality and economic advantage of establishing an overland route and steam navigation from England to India via Egypt and the Red Sea

The book is famous for its large, high-quality, oblong folio lithographic plates based on detailed drawings Head made during his journey through Egypt, capturing historic ruins, desert landscapes, and strategic ports.

Provenance: Kevin O’Sullivan (1943-2026)

Gloucestershire based collector Kevin O’Sullivan studied English at Jesus College, Cambridge and then went on to complete a PhD in Irish literature at Trinity College, Dublin before joining the Foreign Office. This position took him to various places including India, Washington and Africa where he began collecting native art. He didn’t slow down after retirement and moved to Madrid to study Spanish at the university before returning to the UK and settling in Winchcombe where he continued to add to his comprehensive collection of prints, books, china and objets d’art

Each picture is enscribed “Drawn on stone by William Walton from a sketch by Capt. C Head, Printed by Charles Joseph Hullmandel

Founded in 1816 by George Smith and Alexander Elder (initially in Fenchurch Street before moving to 65 Cornhill in 1824). The firm later relocated to 15 Waterloo Place in 1868 and operated until 1917, when its remaining stock and book rights were acquired by John Murray.

A set of eight early 19th-century Victorian framed lithographs depict ancient Egyptian temples, tombs, and topographical landscapes. The black and white prints sit within dark grey paper mounts and narrow gold-painted wooden frames with flat profiles and square-cornered mitres. Each individual piece measures 43 cm high and 56 cm wide, with one larger piece measuring 46 cm high and 62 cm wide. Captain C.F. Head drew the original sketches during his journey through Egypt, which William Walton drew on stone and Charles Joseph Hullmandel printed, before Smith, Elder & Co. published the series in 1833. The scenes capture various historic locations, including the ruins at Carnac, Luxor, Medinah Habou, the Temple of Isis at Denderah, and the Tombs of the Kings at Thebes. These prints suit a gentleman's library or study, where they hang collectively on a wall above a sideboard. The set brings a traditional scholarly atmosphere to a room, pairing well with dark wood furniture and classic interior decoration. Collectors of historical prints and topographical art use them as focal wall art in domestic living spaces or offices.

During the 19th century, interest in Egyptology surged across Europe following diplomatic expeditions and travel accounts. Artists and draughtsmen documented ancient monuments, temples, and landscapes using lithography to publish multi-volume series for collectors and enthusiasts of the Grand Tour era.

These prints were crafted using planographic lithographic techniques on heavy cotton or linen rag paper. The framed works typically feature wooden mouldings with water gilding or oil gilding, alongside paper matting to separate the print from the glass.

Authentic period lithographs display fine tonal gradations without halftone dot patterns common in modern offset printing. They often exhibit natural paper oxidisation, foxing, original publication text along the lower margins, and hand-drawn line qualities characteristic of lithographic stone plates.

A set of matching architectural lithographs can be hung in a symmetrical grid above a sideboard, console, or sofa to create a structured gallery wall. Combining monochrome historic artwork with clean modern furniture creates balanced contrast in contemporary spaces.

Display prints away from direct sunlight and areas of high humidity to prevent fading, paper distortion, and mould growth. Ensure acid-free mount boards and UV-filtering glass are used within the framing to prevent environmental degradation.
