1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique Edwardian sideboard in mahogany, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of excellent quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and beautifully executed marquetry inlay.

The front has a pair of panelled cupboard doors, each opening to a shelved interior and fitted with ornate brass drop handles, flanking a central arched open recess beneath an inlaid frieze.

Each door is inlaid with an oval medallion depicting a cherub, surrounded by scrolling foliage, birds and flowers in boxwood and fruitwoods, with a matching inlaid scroll to the frieze. The case is outlined with boxwood stringing and has a shaped apron, and the sideboard stands on square tapering legs with stringing, ending in brass castors.

The mahogany displays a stunning flame-figured grain to the sides and a warm, rich colour with a lovely mellow patina.

This Edwardian sideboard is constructed from dark brown mahogany with marquetry inlay in satinwood, boxwood, and fruitwoods. The design incorporates a pair of cupboard doors with ornate brass drop handles, flanking a central arched open recess beneath an inlaid frieze. Each door displays an oval medallion depicting a cherub within scrolling foliage, birds, and flowers, complemented by boxwood stringing, a shaped apron, and square tapered legs ending in brass castors. Measuring 76.5 cm high, 137.5 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, the unit fits comfortably in a dining room, living room, or hallway to provide functional storage and display space. The dark timber grain and warm finish integrate easily into traditional and English country house interiors.

FAQs

Edwardian mahogany furniture often features lighter, highly refined proportions compared to earlier Victorian styles, drawing heavy influence from eighteenth-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs with boxwood stringing and floral or figurative marquetry.

Pieces from this era typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak framing, embellished with satinwood and boxwood inlay, hand-cut dovetail jointing in drawers, brass drop handles, and brass swivel castors.

Authentic Edwardian marquetry shows precise timber grain variation within tiny inlaid motifs, subtle shading achieved through sand-burning, natural age-related shrinkage lines around the veneer borders, and original hand-cut joinery.

Position the piece against neutral or deeply saturated painted walls to highlight the warm wood tones, pairing it with contemporary artwork above and minimal modern decorative ceramics to balance the detailed woodwork.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to nourish the wood; keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting and timber fading.
