Tudor and Dutch Golden Age portraiture typically features formal poses, detailed garments, stiff lace ruff collars, and symbolic elements such as coats of arms to denote lineage and social standing.

Artists traditionally executed these portraits using oil paints composed of natural mineral pigments bound with linseed oil, applied onto stretched linen canvas or timber panels.

Authentic historical paintings display characteristic craquelure patterns across the paint surface, period stretcher bars, natural pigment oxidisation, and signs of aged varnish.

A large portrait painting functions as a focal feature when positioned in a library, entrance hall, or dining space, paired with understated dark furniture to highlight the rich tones.

Oil paintings require placement away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources, needing only light dusting with a dry, soft brush rather than liquid cleaners.
